The many beautiful and delicate murals that adorn the ceiling and walls, produced with indigenous traditional paints, add to the allure of these caverns.

The premises were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1991 due to its historical, archaeological, and aesthetic significance. The temple has been in operation for almost 22 centuries and still exudes kindness and spirituality. Visitors may access the temple by climbing stairs, and the vista from the summit of the cliff is as amazing as the temple’s golden interior.

Royal Botanical Garden

The Peradeniya Botanical Gardens are adjacent to Kandy and are known for its unique orchid collections and acres of sweeping grass and trees. The British developed it in a royal park in the 19th century with flora gathered from throughout the island and tea seedlings from India. Today, this is a popular destination for visitors as well as young people who want to spend time together in the magnificent parkland setting.

The gardens, which include a classic Avenue of Palms, cover 147 hectares and are home to 4,000 plant species, including orchids, spices, herbal and medicinal plants, and a variety of palm trees. The gardens are bordered on three sides by a loop formed by the River Mahaweli and have a mild climate and height (500m above sea level).

Dickwella is a small beach market town in the Matara district of Sri Lanka’s southern region. It’s around 22 kilometers (14 miles) from Matara. Dickwella’s long sandy beach is protected from the elements by headlands, reefs, and sand bars, making swimming safe.

Dickwella is home to Sri Lanka’s tallest seated Buddha statue, which measures 50 meters (160 feet) tall. The rooms behind the statue include a ‘library’ of vivid paintings representing incidents from the Buddha’s life and miscreants’ punishments covering the walls.

Galle Fort

Galle Fort, which was founded by the Portuguese in the 16th century, extended by the Dutch in the 17th century, and consolidated by the British in the 19th century, is no longer a historical wreck, but has been turned into a live, vibrant modern community. The Fort, located on the southwest corner of the island, encompasses 52ha and comprises almost 500 homes within its thick, grey granite rampart walls.

The Fort is entered by one of two major gates, one of which has the Dutch Coat of Arms on one side and the British on the other. The cobblestone lanes are dotted with Dutch and British period buildings, as well as some art decor masterpieces, many of which have been turned into boutique shops and beautiful guest rooms.

Colombo

Colombo, Sri Lanka’s commercial center, is around 30 minutes away from the International Airport through the new Expressway. Its outskirts are hectic, congested with traffic, and densely packed with office and residential buildings, but the city center has been revitalized with bright new high-rise hotels and office buildings, restored and re-painted Edwardian houses, and vast tree-lined boulevards.

Because of its parks and playing fields, inspired architecture and spaciousness, air-conditioned retail malls, high-end restaurants, and hotels to suit all budgets, Colombo appears poised to reclaim its title as Asia’s Garden City. There is no subway system, and buses are generally crowded with commuters, so taking one of the ubiquitous, buzzing three-wheeler taxis known as ‘tuk tuks’ is a fantastic way to see the city.
